Rompetrol Rafinare accelerates the energy transition – photovoltaic power plant for the Petromidia refinery
The photovoltaic plant is expected to generate more than 9,800 MWh of renewable electricity annually, all of which will be used by the refinery.
The project will increase the share of renewable energy used in refinery operations and reduce the associated carbon emissions. Rompetrol Rafinare estimates an annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 6,024 tons of CO₂, contributing to national and European decarbonization targets.
The total project value is approximately 44 million lei, comprising about 14 million lei in non-refundable financing from the Modernization Fund and a 30-million-lei contribution from Rompetrol Rafinare.
The project is scheduled for implementation by December 31, 2028, in accordance with the deadline set for the funding call. The project is part of the KMG International (Rompetrol) Group's comprehensive decarbonization strategy.
In recent years, the Petromidia refinery has implemented significant projects to reduce environmental impact, increase energy efficiency, optimize technological processes, and strengthen the platform's energy independence.
A flagship project is the new cogeneration plant at the Petromidia site, which entered commercial operation at the end of 2025. With an installed capacity of approximately 80 MW, the plant currently meets the refinery's electricity and process steam requirements, contributing to the optimization of energy consumption and increased operational efficiency.
As a result of continuous investments and upgrades, alongside production optimization efforts, Petromidia recorded a refining capacity utilization rate of 98.11% in the first half of the year. During this period, the refinery achieved a white product yield of 86.54% and improved its Energy Intensity Index (EII) to a new all-time low of 92 points – 0.4 points below the level recorded in the same period last year.
The Petromidia refinery is the KMG International Group's main asset and one of the most modern industrial complexes in the Black Sea region, playing a vital role in supplying fuel to Romania and regional markets.
Recently, Rompetrol Rafinare announced the launch of a project to develop a photovoltaic plant with an installed capacity of 4.8 MW and an energy storage system of approximately 9 MWh at the Vega Ploieşti refinery.
The photovoltaic plant is estimated to generate over 6,200 MWh of renewable energy annually, with the entire output intended for internal consumption. This estimated production is equivalent to approximately two-thirds of the Vega refinery's annual electricity consumption.
The significant shareholders of Rompetrol Rafinare are KMG International (54.63% – direct and indirect) and the Romanian State, through the Ministry of Energy (44.7%).
