The gas turbines for the cogeneration plant have arrived at Rompetrol Energy

Rompetrol Energy, part of the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund (KREIF), announces the successful delivery of the two Siemens gas turbines, which are to be mounted and prepared for integration into the new cogeneration plant, near the Petromidia Năvodari refinery. The equipment represents the main technological parts of the assembly that Rompetrol Energy will operate starting next year.

"The installation of the turbines represents one of the most important steps in the continuation of the project, a large-scale one that will allow us to be a viable energy solution for the Petromidia platform, but also for the National Energy System. Through their configuration, the turbines will ensure optimal operational yields, and the technology used is state-of-the-art", said Boris Bucur, General Manager of Rompetrol Energy.

The SGT-750 turbines are produced in the Siemens factory from Finspang, were brought by sea from Sweden, and their use in Romania represents a premiere. Each piece of equipment runs on natural gas, has a raw material heating rate of 9,120 kJ/kWh and generates over 37 MWh of energy.

The increased efficiency of the turbines used by Rompetrol Energy is also certified by the low intervention rate guaranteed by the manufacturer, which shows that, in a 17-year operation cycle, the equipment will need only 17 days of maintenance.

In total, the new power plant will generate approximately 80 MWh of electricity - of which approximately 60-70 MWh to fully cover the electricity needs of the Petromidia platform and technological steam of up to 180 tons/hour.

At the same time, with the help of the turbines, the energy production activity will record significant decreases in the generation of carbon dioxide emissions, for the production of electricity and a saving of energy resources of about 1.2 MWh.

At the moment, the project is in the execution phase with a progress of 84% in the design and supply of equipment, and the actual construction of the technological assembly exceeds 27%. The current indicators are in the execution schedule agreed by Rompetrol Energy and the general contractor of the works, Calik Enerji, so the deadline – July 31, 2023 - will be respected.

The project, worth over 140 million dollars, is financed by the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund (KRIEF) and will generate, annually, about 11 million dollars in taxes paid to the state budget. The investment is a brownfield type and will integrate the assets of Uzina Termoelectrica Midia, as well as its staff, for the operation of the new plant's equipment.

"The construction of the cogeneration plant is just one of the strategic directions that the KMG International Group has undertaken, in the development of technological operations, with a strong positive impact in reducing emissions, but also with clear objectives in securing the energy resources of which the Petromidia Năvodari refinery, the largest in Romania and one of the most important in the region, is in great need. Through this project, we will also be able to reduce processing costs, which will bring clear benefits in the refining margins, implicitly, in the results that the refinery will achieve in the long term", added Iskander Abdibaitov, President of the Steering Committe of KREIF.

The Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund was established in 2018 by the KMG International Group (Rompetrol), together with the Society for the Administration of Energy Investments (SAPE), with the main objective of developing energy projects in Romania.

In addition to the cogeneration plant, KREIF has an ongoing project regarding the development of the fuel distribution chain in Romania, and other opportunities for the development of the refining and petrochemical segments are being studied and are to be implemented in the medium and long term.

Rompetrol Energy, the operator of the future cogeneration plant, is majority owned by the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund (KREIF), along with Rominserv and Uzina Termoelectrica Midia.
