The investment program in storage capacities, continued by Rompetrol Rafinare

Rompetrol Rafinare has completed a new stage of the rehabilitation and modernization program for the tank farm within the Petromidia refinery. The works consisted of rehabilitating four tanks used for storing petroleum products, while another two strategic tanks are currently being modernized.

“Through this extensive program, we ensure that the storage infrastructure meets the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and environmental protection. It is a strategic investment that supports operational efforts by ensuring flexibility in the assumed production plans. By the end of the program, we estimate that we will also achieve a 20% increase in storage capacity for finished products and components,” stated Sorin Graure, General Manager of Rompetrol Rafinare.

One of the rehabilitated tanks has a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters and will store a component required in the diesel fuel production process. It underwent major repairs to its foundation, the anti-corrosive coating was renewed, complementary equipment was replaced and refurbished, and the cooling and fire extinguishing systems were modernized.

Additionally, rehabilitation works were completed for three tanks used to store gasoline, with capacities ranging between 3,000 and 10,000 cubic meters. Essential repair works were carried out, including the replacement of internal floating roof seals, restoration of anti-corrosive protection, and ensuring operational compliance.

The storage capacity rehabilitation program continues with the reconstruction of a vacuum distillate tank. The old structure was demolished, and a new tank—with a 20% increased capacity—is now under construction. At the same time, early-stage rehabilitation works are underway for one of the eight crude oil tanks, with a capacity of 56,000 cubic meters.

These works are part of the general modernization program for the tank farms (Petromidia and Vega). Since 2007, Rompetrol Rafinare has invested over 40 million USD in the storage capacities of the two refineries, which involved the rehabilitation and modernization of nearly 60 tanks. These works have also resulted in a 20% increase in total storage capacity across the two refineries.

Rompetrol Rafinare operates the refineries of the KMG International Group (Rompetrol) – Petromidia Năvodari (the largest and most complex refinery in the country) and Vega Ploieşti (the only producer of bitumen and hexane in Romania), along with the country’s only petrochemical division. The production units account for almost half of Romania’s total refining capacity.

The main shareholders of Rompetrol Rafinare SA are KMG International (54.63% – direct and indirect) and the Romanian State, through the Ministry of Energy (44.7%).
